Susan Ee - End of Days

"They’re all so darned perfect in every way...If it wasn’t for you, I’d think that angels were all totally interchangeable."
’‘You mean because I’m beyond perfect?"
’‘No. Because you’re so humble."
’‘Humility’s overrated."
’‘So is clear self-assessment, apparently."
‘Real warriors don’t stand for psychobabble."
’‘Or for rational thinking."

Steel your heart. End of Days will plummet your earth like a meteor blinding the light of stars.

God's gift to women

Susan Ee definitely brought this one up a notch. I'm a hundred degree happier now that Raffe is back in the saddle so you can imagine how hot is in here. He's exactly the kind of guy from who I can't keep my imaginary hands off. Blame is not on me. Perfection hasn't been part of my life till he appeared in all his unworldly glory. Thanks God I got him back! So the saying proves to be right. Absence does make the heart grow fonder. My pounding heart is undoubtedly super-fond!

‘You’d be surprised. Just because I don’t have a problem on the outside visible for the world to see doesn’t mean I’m not messed up on the inside. That can be just as hard to deal with.’

Penryn seems to have a delicate inclination to get herself involved in impossible messed-up situations and she keeps ending up in places where she shouldn't be ignoring common sense. Such as the Messenger's election where she's most likely facing death for she's the infamous Daughter of Man Angel Slayer. Penryn's new year's wishes were swept away right after midnight because she is not having the best time of her life so far. Instead of partying at her senior prom and kissing ordinary-yet-amazing Raffe all over, she wields a deadly angel sword disguised as a teddy bear and occasionally goes on a trip to hell on Friday nights. Just like normal teens do in their free time.

He looks down at me with sincere eyes. ‘If I were human, I would have been the first in line for you . . .’

Raffe and Penryn are the kind of couple whose every single kiss gives me goosebumps. I'm head over heels about the star-crossed romances which are doomed to fail eventually, for the dark forces are non-stop plotting against the love birds. I hate to pop the pink bubble but their future-togetherness is wrapped up in a heavy beyond-hope never-fading haze. Each sliver of their might-be is going to hell in a handbasket. Argh!!!

Fools rush where the angels fear to tread

Freak-out show takes a whole new level in the Pit. Hellions and the Consumed seem pretty disgusting in writing, let alone if it'd be made into a movie. But that would be totally, prodigiously, wonderfully amaze-balls! It's time for a prayer, guys.

Angels dancing on the head of a pin

The outcome is that the angel apocalypse wipe out humanity then the angels give ground and human race is back on track. Yeeah, it has perfectly made sense...???
Angels will think twice with whom they mess around next time. I suppose they could pass their spare time some other way. They can always polish their wings or jump from cloud to cloud, can't they? Time is money and better not to be wasted, I guess.

"Being human isn’t about whether you fit in or look like the rest of us. It’s about who you are and what you’re willing to do or not do."

Aside from the racial differences, I love the way it worked out with Penryn and Raffe. The vicious circle of star-crossed love story has broken which proves what's meant to be will always find a way. Never-never was their relationship earthbound. Their banter? Invaluable.

P.S I like you

A gut-clenching, queasiness-inspiring, happiness-sucking black hole is that Penryn and Raffe left in their wake. Not nice of you guys but I never stopped loving you!

How I feel now

My chest felt like I’d been hit by an NFL linebacker. I have no strength to do but warm the bench.

P.S.
Come hell or high water, I won't settle with plain ordinary. Thus there's no left to do but keep on daydreaming, right? ;)

Brownie points are rocketing sky high!

Susan Ee - World After

Angel of Vengeance aka Wrath of God

"Then, a darker silhouette appears against the sky.
Menacing demon wings.
Broad shoulders.
The shape of a Greek god gliding through the sky.
Raffe."
—So this is how Raffe could look like. Holy crap on a cracker! *mental swooning then full black-out*

No surprise, though. If he's a hell on wheels archangel, he should live up to the perfect-guys-exist-only-in-books expectations. Or would I be wrong? Don't think so.
Despite his physical absence — which is enough to make the angels weep—the memories speak for themselves and keep up the tension. I love peeking into his nuances of being a fierce warrior and moments of fond emotions behind the mask of a hell-bent I-am-in-charge-of-a-batch-of-angel-mercenaries macho guy. Succinctly, Raffe managed to wrap me around his little finger. Not many has pulled that off so far thus he successfully worked his way up to the top of my booklover-list. Such a petite cherub.

"How bad are things when your clinically insane mother is more rational than you are?"

Penryn is true to her hard-ass, kicking-God's-most-gruesome-creatures-in-the-butt self. I'm doing cartwheels everytime she gets a blow in the effing angels' exquisitely-carved jaws. If it was up to me to choose between humans and angels, my momentous answer would be 'how about Penryn and Raffe fly away in the sunset?' They have been through way too much than the remnants of humanity. No wonder she thrusts her unsettling doubts in the vault at the back of her head. Until they burst through the walls...God forbid!

I'd love to start a petition titled as Angels have all their right to love the chosen Daughters of Man. Everybody lives happily ever after. Till the Judgment Day shall arrive. Make the best of the golden age of post apocalypse, right?

"I wonder if the satisfaction of a major punch to her perfect jaw would be worth dying a horrible death."

I'd better befriend her ASAP since she does hand to hand combat, wields a mighty angel sword—notorious Pokey Bear— let alone she handles her freak-out crackpot mother and razor-teeth killing machine sister 24/7. It is a lot to ask from anyone. Yet, that's what makes her the number one female heroine who doesn't need a Greek god to watch her back for she's good on her own.
Well, for a while at least.

The locusts creep me out! The combination of darkness, war and romance makes such a spectacular firework that you need to blink several times to enjoy it's beauty. Despite the fact that I'm not for horror, it has every right to be present just to feel the weight of the oncoming human extinction and of battling with savage survival instincts.

My only wish left is to bask in Raffe's immortal glory in the next volume. Amen.

How I feel now

I went through a washing machine and was shaken out to dry.

P.S.
I'm most likely acting as the angel's advocate when I say the End of Days will be epic!!!

I'd be out of my right mind not giving it a high sparkling five. Aren't we ridiculous! *winks*

Rick Yancey - Infinite Sea

World is a clock winding down

Now that Cassie has got Sam back, the self-appointed Survivor Fight Club is stuck up in a dead end. No turning back but they can't move forward either,  so there's no much to left but contemplate where is Evan when he promised he would come back for her.
The story winds up standstill being devoid all of the action that kept the 5th Wave flowing. Unfortunately.

"We were trapped between the before-time and the after-time. Different kind of viral plague: uncertainty, fear, panic."

Why?

Ranger has got caught and she's involved with a guy who's not Ben Parish, despite the obvious they're meant to be together. Maybe it's the twist and turn of a seemingly predictable, flagrantly logical step. I'm adherent to about-face but not the pointless one. It's beyond me why this new king bee appears out of the blue and while he doesn't kick some serious alien-ass but he kicks the bucket within 100 pages. What is the point?

"You know how we tell the good guys from the bad guys? The bad guys shoot at us.”

Why??

I'm on the right track to blow a fuse as it is possible it isn't about vicious we-want-to-destroy-you little aliens anymore but a bunch of people meddling with the nature and our heads. I feel totally screwed over here. Seriously. Big scam.

Silver lining

After some fight-to-deaths and explosions Evan is safe and sound who has found his mayfly. They're the best really!
Additionally to the meticulously detailed characters (even if I can't stand Apocalypse-Grumpy-Cat-Ranger) I love the writer's garnish. Thought-provoking and intense. Kind of keeping me on edge. Love it!

4 out of 5 (Thanks to the 5th Wave, underrating is not in my intention.)

“Sometimes you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time and what happens is nobody’s fault. You just want to feel bad so you’ll feel better.”

Rick Yancey - The 5th Wave

Crazy : the new normal

Imagine our world is invaded by an anothet species. That the world's fallimg into chaos inch by inch. No order, only survival that matters. It's time of human extinction and occupation of Earth by a way more intelligent form of life. World's end sucks. According to Cassie Sullivan at least. Especially when attacks are arriving in waves. First the EMP—electromagnetic impulse that takes all the power. Second wave—the forces of nature outsmart the smartness of humanity. Third wave—the Fourth Horseman. Infection spread by birs becomes world wide. Fourth wave—humans are not what we believe them to be anymore. The Others are among us and take us down one by one. Rule one: do not trust anyone. Rule two: the only way to stay alive as long as possible is to stay alone.

Cassiopeia—she whose words excel

Cassie Sullivan (not Cassie for Cassandra or Cassie for Cassidy. Cassie for Cassiopeia, the constellation, the queen tied to her chair in the northern sky, who was beautiful but vain, placed in the heavens by the sea god Poseidon as a punishment for her boasting) the girl who lives an ordinary teenager's life in which a missed party, a bad mark or the state of uttet-invisibility to her crush feels the end of the world till it's the end of the world.

She's coping with lack of running water, the death of her cell phone and floks of pillaging bands amidst the splintered shatters our well-known world has become. She's facing the disintegration of her family and if it's not enough she's petrified by seclusion in the woods weeping herself to sleep every time while ruminating over her old life. Evidently you may start to appreciate what you've had the moment it fades into vacancy.

It made me thinking and I was taken aback by the plain truth that I would be helpless without electricity. How the hell would I survive in the nature anyway? Eating bugs and freezing at night because I have no idea how to light a fire without a friggin match are not my cup of tea. I'm not Katniss hunting for deers and going with a bow for heaven's sake! And even if I were, I'm still not sure wheter there are any of those furry creatures in my area...
To sum it up, I should probably apply to a girl scout adventure. In case there's a chance I make it.

Kick-ass girl

Her bestie are a M16 and a Luger both of which become quite handy in these somber days. How else would she pick up a fight against the Others? Not with the teddy bear she's clutching so tenaciously in her other hand for sure. I admire her audaciousness she tramples all the way just to find his baby brother who has been taken away from her. Nothing and no one stands in her way otherwise she brings down the obstacles without batting an eyelid. Irresolution is not on top of her wish list. She does her best to avoid tenuity tenuity which can easily cause her imminent death.

"This is what life on Earth has become since the Arrival. It’s an either/or world."

Trust issues

Having adjusted to the new bleak conditions where no one could be trusted otherwise you're a dead man, she restlessly strides toward the military base where she surmises Sammy would be. Then like a lightning struck she's shot by a Silencer. She's pretty sure she's wasted until she finds herself being taken care of by a chocolate-eyed farmboy, Evan Walker. She's between hell and high water. Can she afford the benefit of the doubt and rely on a complete stranger? She doesn't give credit to humans anymore. The enemy succeeded because they disguised themselves with human faces. That proved to be the downfall of humanity. It would refute every rule she's followed so far.

Betrayed

Albeit Evan seems to hold out on Cassie, she isn't ready to let him go after months of lack of interaction. Would she fall for him if they weren't the last representatives of a dying species? It seems so. Until she finds out he's her Silencer. He's human and one of them at the same time.

"This is what the Others have done to us. You can’t band together to fight without trust. And without trust, there was no hope.
How do you rid the Earth of humans? Rid the humans of their humanity."

He doesn't left her no choice but to kill him. Isn't it what he does to her kind? What he's the heart to do. It's nothing personal only survival and retrieval of Sammy. She's beset by doubts whether shoot him in the head or not. It’s an either/or world. On the other hand, he could've already killed her if he had wanted to. And why on earth does he tend her so carefully? Protect her? Feed her? Diabolic circle of swirling doubts.

Still. He follows her when she rams the highway alone. She's sick of being alone. She's sick of what the Others did to her. Self-pity is not an option whatsoever. There's no way left than she rams the highway alone. She's sick of being alone. She's sick of what the Others did to her. Concededly she's simply lost in this universe. Still, Evan watches her in the distance ready to take any Silencer down who comes to her five-mile-range. Because she's his mayfly for he betrayed his kind. Evan Walker. Silencer. Traitor.

"You know how sometimes you tell yourself that you have a choice, but really you don’t have a choice? Just because there are alternatives doesn’t mean they apply to you."

No-man’s-land

In the meantime children under eighteen are trained to pop out the 'infesteds' on Wright-Petterson millitary base just under the glinting light of the mothership. They couldn't be more luminous targets waving a billboard with orment cursive letters on it : Screw you, we're here. Shoot right at us!

Sam and the other kids are forced to endure a trial to their breaking point. Because those who went through with earthquakes, floods, plague, the loss of their entire family one by one, those who are the strongest. Because those who don't back down pose a threat to the enemy and mean a beacon of hope for humanity.

"An old saying about the truth setting you free. Don’t buy it. Sometimes the truth slams the cell door shut and throws a thousand bolts."

Ben Parish–once-upon-a-time superstar footballer of high school, leaving a bunch of coquettish girls in his wake, is lost in the deep sea of guilt and self-hatred—makes an excellent soldier who's willing to sacrifice his remaining humanity to wipe out every single extra-terrestrial. While leading his squad to battle whose youngest member is seven he starts to get the hang of reality. That they're screwed over here and they're in parctice of taking down humans. The whole military base is a set up crawled with infesteds. The children trained to eliminate the ubiquitous foe in fact are slaughtering one another. They're 5th wave.

"Who made a promise, and if he breaks that promise, the war is over—not the big war, but the war that matters, the one in the battlefield of his heart."

As soon as he finds out, he leaves his squad behind and rushes for Sam for whom he made a promise. Promises are the new currency of this dilapidated-apocalyptic world. Even if nothing else matters, even if he can't offer security but a reassurance of coming back for him. A promise that he once made for his baby sister and never was able to keep. The minute we decide one person doesn’t matter, the Others will win.

Love-struck

"I know Evan is here, and Evan will not give up until I am safe or he is dead."

Cassie intrudes in the death camp affirmed by the fact that her Silencer watches her from a safe distance. She fights her way through to Sammy in the midst of explosions and diversions concieved by Evan. I'm quite impressed by their star-crossed love story which contradicts common sense and passes the bounderies of this realm.

Storyline discribed in a few words
